Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
