European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
